King, 52, scoffed at the comments friends made that riding 150 miles across city and country roads in Washington and Maryland was part of a midlife crisis.
“We are not spring chickens, but we all felt compelled to help move the needle” in cancer research, King said.
The Kings found out about Kay’s diagnosis on their 10th wedding anniversary, after starting construction on a house and having recently acquired two Corgi puppies.
“(Cancer) is just not predictable,” he said, adding that his wife as a longtime YMCA employee was active for much of her life. “It’s kinda like a big lump in your throat. ... I don’t care how big you are. News like that throws you for a loop.”
The Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised $4.7 million since its inception last year for research for individualized treatment plans, bone marrow-transplant improvements and immune-system booster treatment programs.
King said he has been cycling for about 11 years, and has made the Cap2Cap Ride from Richmond to Williamsburg, but had not ridden 150 miles in two days like the Washington event.
The team thought the fundraising would be harder than the ride.
It turns out, the support of friends and family came easy and the ride was more difficult than expected.
